This week at service learning I realized the kids are comfortable with us being there, which leads to a better environment. This week, one of the other local centers was closed so there were more older kids at the club. They were bigger than the kids who are usually there when we go, so they took over the spaces they wanted. The boys who normally played basketball or ran around in the gym were now forced to do art because the older kids wouldn't let them in their games. I decided my time would probably be better spent in art as well, so most of us were being creative.
The activity this week was painting cardboard, and some of the kids really have a lot of talent. One child drew a cartoon character to almost exact likeness, whereas the most I could do was paint a flower. It got interesting when one of the volunteers asked a child who he was going to give his painting to. Some said their parents or siblings, and one boy said he would give it to his girlfriend. This turned into a try and guess who he was dating time for all the other kids in the room and it was very funny to see how they reacted because they all know the same group of people.
