Mt. Pleasant-More info about college

Yesterday at Explore we began by discussing the differences between a 2-year and a 4-year college. During this discussion a few of the myths about attending each type of school came up and we addressed them as a group. Following this activity, the students logged into their College Board accounts and browsed the website, paying special attention to the "College Planning" Tab. There were as many Explore leaders as students so we were able to work one-on-one with a student. I find doing something as simple as this can really make a difference to these students because they are less likely to go home and do this on their own. So even if we expose them to the College Board website a few times this semester at least they will gain some knowledge about the college process. The students had to fill out a survey for the Explore program, and then we talked about what the students would like to do for the last session. The guidance counselor gave us a good suggestion, which was for the Explore leaders to come up with their most helpful website that they used either for applying to college or that they currently use in college.
