St.Pat's- Week 1

Technically this was my second week at St.Patrick's Academy. I went last Friday for my on-site orientation and then the program started right after my tour at 3. We were told that there were going to approximately 40 students in the program (2o freshman and 20 sophomores). Unfortunately the freshman had a retreat that day and were not in school and there was a miscommunication with the sophormores because they thought that the program was starting this week. So in the end we only had three girls that came for the first day. We had a bunch of activities planned but we could not do them with only the three of them so we basically sat and got to know them and we told them about ourselves as well. They had done EXPLORE! last year so they were able to tell us what they liked about it and what they would like to change. It was fun getting to know the girls but we were excited to go this week and meet the other students. Unfortunately, once again the students were not prepared to come after school so we only had six girls show up. It was a little better than last week but we still are hoping for a bigger turn out in the upcoming weeks. Since there was a better show up this time we were able to play some ice breakers and have fun with the girls. We also gave them papers to fill out that asked them questions about school and what they want to do in the future. By reading their answers we can see what their aspirations are in life and how we can help them achieve them through the program. I think the girls had a really good time and they said they were going to spread the word so their friends will start coming. They are also really excited because one day they are going to come to campus and go to class with us and they will also be going to a basketball game. I'm really looking forward to these trips. All in all i think the program has started off a little slow but I am really excited because I think if the students are really passionate about going to college we can help them do it!
